Mixing and Mastering

Mixing is when you are working with the individual tracks of a song - kick, snare, bass, voc...etc. You are adjusting the balance, EQ, effects, and anything else you want to do to make the song have a sound you are looking for.
Mastering is done after all the mixes are done and is much more technical. It use to be necessary to ensure that the mixes were cut on the vinyl records properly. These days those physical requirements aren't necessary,
but now mastering is about making overall adjustments like adding more high frequency boost or compressing the mix of certain songs so that song to song on the album there is a consistency between all songs on the album.
While mastering is not just about making the mixes louder, generally a mix engineer will leave the mastering engineer some headroom so that they can adjust the level one way or another to fit with the rest of the songs on the album.
